India BioImaging North-East Chapter :
Microscopy and Image Analysis Training Course 2026
Dates- June 8-12 2026
Venue: IIT Guwahati
Overview of the Course:
This course will cover the fundamentals of light microscopy, including different light paths, contrast techniques, principles of fluorescence, imaging capabilities, and confocal microscopy. It will be followed by hands-on training on PSF measurement, multi-dimensional image acquisition, 3D reconstruction, etc. Participants will gain practical experience using advanced imaging modalities, including widefield, point scanning, and spinning disk confocal microscopes. The hands-on sessions will be supplemented with individual exercises, assignment submissions, and discussions to address any questions.
The course also includes an image analysis component, introducing participants to the basics of digital image analysis, data handling, and ethical considerations. Additionally, research talks by eminent scientists will provide insights into the applications of light microscopy, demonstrating how the knowledge gained can be used to derive meaningful scientific conclusions from digital images.
This is an intensive training course that combines lectures with practical demonstrations, hands-on sessions, and discussions. Full-time participation is mandatory.

Who can Attend:
Eligible applicants include M.Sc. final-year students, I-PhD/PhD candidates, Postdoctoral Fellows (PDFs), faculty members from universities and colleges, and core imaging facility staff looking to enhance their expertise in imaging, microscopy, and image analysis or accelerate their R&D careers. We strongly encourage applications from participants in non-tier 1 cities across India, where access to advanced imaging technologies is limited. Notably, 70% of the selected participants will be from these regions
Practical Information:
The course is limited to 20 participants. Please note that applications without a letter of motivation will not be considered for selection.
Registration:
Registration fees for selected candidates:
M.Sc: INR 10500.00 (inclusive taxes)
PhD/PDF: INR 13500.00 (inclusive taxes)
Faculty/Staff: INR 16500.00 (inclusive taxes)
The registration fee covers course materials, breakfasts, meals, coffee breaks, and accommodation. Lodging will be arranged in double-occupancy rooms at the IIT Guwahati. Participants are responsible for booking and covering their travel expenses. Limited travel support is available for up to five student participants.
How to apply:
Please scan or click the QR code (The application is not opened yet). Enter the required details, and upload your motivation letter and a recommendation letter from the HOD (for M.Sc students) or PI (for PhD students and postdocs). The letters should be in PDF format and below 1MB. The application deadline is xxxxxxxxxxxx. Selected candidates will be informed via e-mail and asked to register.
Instructions for motivation letter:
-
Include your relevant skills, experience, and qualifications showing why you would be suitable for the course.
-
Explain why you would like to attend, including what you can contribute and how you think you will be benefitted from the course.
Prerequisites for application:
-
Little experience with microscopy.
-
Basic knowledge of ImageJ or Fiji is preferred but not mandatory.
-
Successful applicants will have to bring in their laptops for the course.
Learning Outcome:
-
This course will help the participants to be confident enough to correctly handle advanced microscopes (e.g: laser scanning confocal, spinning disk confocal, etc.), optimize image quality, and set up microscope parameters as per the requirement. These are crucial to obtain the best scientific results.
-
This course will help to develop skills to analyze imaging data and rational thinking about image quality and data reproducibility.
